The Shakopee City Council met Tuesday, Aug. 20. Among the meeting highlights:

Shakopee receives League of Minnesota Cities “City of Excellence” award

 Representatives from the League of Minnesota Cities presented City Council with the City of Excellence Award in the category of cities with 30,000+ residents. The award was given for the City’s “Taxpayer Receipt” program, which helps inform residents on where their tax dollars are spent. Council approves sale of surplus facilities equipment 

The City Council approved the sale of surplus equipment identified by the Facilities Division including cubicle walls, desks, and filing cabinets. Items will be sold at auction and unsold items will be disposed of. More information: Assistant City Administrator, Chelsea Petersen, 952-233-9310.

Extended construction hours approved for traffic signal improvements project

The City Council approved the extension of construction hours for the project underway at County Road 101/Shenandoah Drive, allowing contractors to begin work at 6 a.m. Monday–Saturday through the end of October. More information: Senior Engineering Technician, Alex Enyi, 952-233-9367

Fire Department to purchase two new trucks for 2026

The City Council approved the purchase of two new fire engines and required loose equipment in the amount of $2,541,536.86. These two engines will replace an engine purchased in 2006 that is due for replacement in 2026, and will place a 2026 fire engine as a front-line apparatus at each fire station. Council approves purchase of replacement firefighter turnout gear

The City Council approved the purchase of five complete sets of firefighter turnout gear to replace five sets of expired gear. Firefighter turnout gear must be replaced in 10-year cycles. Funding for replacement turnout gear is included in the uniform account of the fire department's annual budget. More information: Fire Chief, Mike Nelson, 952-233-9579

New playground coming to Meadows Park

The City Council approved a contract with St. Croix Recreation using the State Contract for $199,146.55 for a replacement playground at Meadows Park. The park will include a new playground while keeping the majority of the existing container area. More information: Director of Planning and Development, Michael Kerski, 952-233-9346

 Picnic shelter coming to Quarry Park

The City Council Awarded a contract not to exceed $180,000 including a contingency of $14,000 to Northland Recreation for the purchase of a shelter for Quarry Park. The shelter is the last major improvement for the Quarry Park Master Plan and will be located in the northwest corner of the park. Council approves sale of surplus property by Police Department

The City Council declared two vehicles obtained through forfeiture proceedings as surplus property and authorized their disposal. The vehicles suitable for resale will be sold at auction and the proceeds, if any, will be distributed according to Minnesota State Statute. The vehicles unsuitable for resale will be junked. Stans Park tennis court painting project contract approved

The City Council approved a contract with Court Surfaces and Repairs, Inc., for the Stans Tennis Court Painting project in the amount of $25,575.00. The project is part of the City's adopted Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) which includes the resurfacing of the courts at Stans Park in 2024.
