To run for City Council, candidates must be eligible to vote in Minnesota, at least 21 years old upon assuming office, and a resident of Shakopee for at least 30 days prior to the Nov. 5 general election.
The mayor is elected to serve a four-year term as the chief executive officer of the city, presiding at City Council meetings as a voting member of the council, with no power of veto. The mayor receives an annual salary of $15,000. The four City Council members are elected to staggered, four-year terms. A councilor’s annual salary is $7,500.
City Council elections are non-partisan and candidates run for their seats at large. There is no city primary election; names of all candidates filing will appear on the November general election ballot.
