Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E) 

D.A.R.E. is designed to teach students how to say no to drugs, make good decisions and face the consequences of making decisions. The program is taught to fifth-graders at Shakopee Area Catholic School (SACS).

The program’s 10-week curriculum allows students to learn about drugs, how they affect the body, the consequences of choosing or not choosing to do drugs, how to make good decisions and what alternatives they have. For more information about the D.A.R.E. program, please call 952-233-9400.

Community Outreach by Police for Students (C.O.P.S.) 

C.O.P.S. is a custom-built program that addresses the specific needs of the Shakopee School District. Shakopee officers work closely with teachers, school staff and students to form a positive relationship that extends beyond the classroom. C.O.P.S. focuses on giving students the “Courage to be Cool” in every aspect of their lives.   

Shakopee officers visit all fifth-, sixth- and seventh-grade classrooms across the district. C.O.P.S. addresses critical topics such as stress, peer pressure, drug and alcohol abuse, and risky behavior.  Students were given the tools and knowledge to improve communication skills and practice active listening. Officers also helped students identify their personal help network and provided refusal skills for when students are faced with critical decisions now and in the future.

School Resource Officers

The police department and Shakopee School District partner to provide safety and security for the Shakopee Public Schools through our School Resource Officer Program. These officers work in assigned schools during the school year and rotate to patrol duties during the summer. For the 2023-24 school years, Officers Kern and Santos are assigned to the Shakopee Senior High School; Officer Christianson is assigned to Shakopee East Junior High; and Officer Krichbaum is assigned to Shakopee West Junior High. The SROs are also assigned to the elementary, alternative and parochial schools. 

School resource officers perform various duties throughout the course of a school day. Their main role is the safety and prevention of any critical incident or criminal act within the schools. The majority of a school resource officer’s day consists of partnering with school administrators, teachers, school counselors, parents and students to help resolve issues, build positive relationships and provide a safe learning environment.
